Promoting

In November 1997, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers (IYV). United Nations Volunteers (UNV) was designated as the international focal point. With its main objectives of increased recognition, facilitation, networking and promotion of volunteering, IYV provided a unique opportunity to highlight the achievements of millions of volunteers worldwide and encouraged more people to engage in volunteer activity.

The UNV office in New Delhi has been working since then as a 'volunteer hub' - a haven for experiments in volunteer action, volunteer mentoring and a demonstration of how sharing resources among volunteers is possible.

Some initiatives of National relevance (click on link to see website):

Sweccha - We for Change Foundation - Organization funded in Delhi by a group of young Indian students that attempts to promote volunteering in order to bring about visible changes to emprove the life of citizens of the capital
We for Yamuna (Environmental wing of We for Change) it is concerned with raising public interest on the fate of the Yamuna river, seriously endangered by pollution related with domestic sewages and industrial effluents

Team Dipti Welfare Society - A youth group working on various social issues like environment,ICT for development, Disaster Risk Management, etc.
Gandhivolunteers.org - A project of Team Dipti Welfare society. It is a volunteer placement project aiming to mobilize the youth to eradicate social evils through voluntary action.

Mission 2007 - Mission 2007 was born out of the dream of an independent rural India where information and communication technologies (ICTs) bring knowledge, livelihood and prosperity.

Acharya Vinoba Bhave - National Volunteer Awards': for recognition of innovative volunteer efforts instituted by National Foundation for India, in partnership with the UNV - India.

Volunteering and disability - Volunteering has been made an integral part of courses recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India, which now gives recognition to courses, which include volunteer activities of students as part of the curriculum.

National Campaign for Social Inclusivity - Recognition, promotion and consolidation of volunteer efforts with socially marginalised communities.

Volunteering with National organisations - Volunteer promotion work in partnership with National Level organisations such as the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, in planning and execution of volunteer promotion programmes such as exposure trips for urban youth to grassroots voluntary work.

Samatvam - An innovative media foundation hatruns the only online e-zine on disability in the country 'empathyindia', available at www.empathyindia.org. 'Samatvam', created with efforts from the Delhi Team, is foraying into regional workshops for volunteer promotion amongst media persons.

The Travelling Documentary - A novel concept, the brainchild of volunteer documentary film makers was launched in 2002, with the screenings of three films focussing attention at gender sensitivity, management of water resources in Rajasthan and life of people associated with the publicity industry in Delhi respectively. The Travelling Documentary aims to 'de-can' gripping films made on social themes and take them to communities, schools, colleges and other for a where these actually belong.
